Sam Pitroda - Harbinger of a Revolution

May 16, 2012

Satyaranarayan Gangaram Pitroda! The last name rings a bell. Yes - it is Sam Pitroda, the advisor to the Prime Minister of India on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovation. Sam Pitroda was single-handedly responsible for the Communication revolution that happened in India and the reason behind why the Indian economy went on a hockey-stick curve of growth, technological leaps and bounds evolution, opening up to globalization and for being where it is today. Meaning while the US and the world go through economic recession, India is still booming, salaries still sky-high; despite the 1 billion+ population, the job economy still booming and the Indian stock and real-estate markets on a steady growth curve every year.

The Rajiv Gandhi era

In 1987, when Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister, he brought with him young blood and filled the key roles around him with eager, go-getting ministers and executives who wanted to change the world - well, India. Among them was Sam Pitroda, who Rajiv Gandhi appointed as his Technology advisor. And with that began the modernization and globalization of India. As technology swept like a wave through banks and universities, railways and government offices, telephone booths spread through the country with a viral vengeance and telecommunications became affordable and accessible to the common man even in the remotest of villages. As technology became more accessible, penetrating the poorest strata of society, Rajiv Gandhi was hailed as the young hero of the nation and Sam Pitroda, the father of the Communications Revolution.

During this time, Dr. Pitroda headed six technology missions related to telecommunications, water, literacy, immunization, dairy and oilseeds and became the founder and first chairman of India's Telecom Commission.

The Early years

Sam Pitroda had lived in the US since 1964. He did his MS in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. It was here that he founded C-SAM and Wescom (later acquired by Rockwell International). He did research on telecommunications and handheld computing, invented digital switching and in 1975, invented the Electronic Diary. In 1983, he designed his own computer-themed card game called Compucards, which used binary numbers instead of decimals.

In 1984, he was invited to return to India by the then Prime Minister, Smt Indira Gandhi. He came back and founded 'The Center for Development of Telematics' (C-DOT), which triggered the Communication Revolution in India.

The Decade of Innovation

Dr. Sam Pitroda's excellence has been revered by one and all. This was self evident when in 2004, the newly elected Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh invited him to head the National Knowledge Commission of India and appointed him as Advisor to the PM of India.

In 2010, the President of India declared this as 'The Decade of Innovation'. The PM approved setting up of a National Innovation Council under the chairmanship of Sam Pitroda. The mission of this council is to develop a national strategy on innovation with a focus on an Indian model of inclusive growth.

Awards and accolades

Dr. Pitroda holds close to 100 worldwide patents.

Among the many awards and accolades he has received, are two honorary D.Sc. degrees by Andhra University and Sambalpur University, IEEE Communication Society Award and the Skoch Challenger Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for his contribution to Science and Engineering.

The Road ahead

Dr. Pitroda heads today, the Expert Group for Modernization of Indian Railways - the 4th largest Railways in the world, which carry over 30 million passengers and 2.8 million tons of freight daily, through a network of over 70,000 miles, with 1.4 million employees that man it. He is also the Chairman of the Smart Grid Task Force under the Ministry of Power and a founding Commissioner of the United Nations Broadband Commission for Digital Development.

The contributions of Dr. Sam Pitroda, are priceless and endless. It is no wonder that he has been talked about by Times of India and others, as being a hot potential candidate for the next President of India.

Come hear Dr. Pitroda talk about innovation and revolutions in an emerging, third-world economy. Could he give us clues on how we could turn the US & global economies around? Do not miss the Closing Keynote of this year's TiECon 2012 (May 18 - 19, 2012), where you could be hearing the father of the Indian Communication revolution and possibly the future President of India, talk about how he changed the course of history and how we could do it here, all over again.

Deepak Chopra
- Break New Grounds in Entrepreneurship and Leadership

May 14, 2012

'Deepak Chopra? Why is he speaking at TiEcon?' This wasn't the first time I had heard someone say this. I was disappointed and at the same time stumped - as to whether to gawk at the questioner's ignorance, or to marvel at how narrow and limited was the prevalent understanding of entrepreneurship, creativity and leadership. 'Dr. Deepak Chopra, is an adjunct Professor on Entrepreneurship at the Kellogg School of Management'. But saying that alone would not do justice to his ground breaking approach to Entrepreneurship, Management & Leadership and his contribution to the world.

Discovering Deepak

Despite growing up in India, I first came across Deepak's work on Spirituality, Science and Quantum Physics, only after I moved to the US. Watching his videos at a Mind, Body Health retreat by Anthony Robbins, on the remote islands of Fiji, I marveled at how Deepak spun magic out of words and held scientific and spiritual audiences alike, completely mesmerized. I saw him thereafter on CNN and I decided I needed to investigate further. On an impulse I called the Chopra Center in Carlsbad and the wonderful salesman who turned out to be someone whose life had been transformed by Anthony Robbins, gave me an incredible deal to a Chopra spiritual retreat.

On Quantum Physics and Creativity

There began my journey into understanding Deepak's mysticism and philosophy. I was fascinated at how he correlated and logically proved to skeptics like me, that spirituality was really no different from quantum physics at its most basic level. An electron, one of the basic building blocks of matter, is either a particle or a wave of energy housed in the Heisenberg principle of Uncertainty.

Thoughts, neurologists say, are brain waves, which again are nothing but neuro-chemical impulses of energy. And we as humans are a combination of 'Energy' of the cellular and mental kinds. Both these energies coexist and can travel through matter or space. Is that what explains why multiple people in different corners of the globe get the same idea at the same time? Is that what explains two unrelated physicists getting the same eureka moment at the same time and hence sharing the Nobel prize?

"Creativity is a process of transforming raw energy, information, and material of the universe into something that has never before existed", says Dr. Deepak Chopra, MD, Physician and now an Entrepreneur, Mystic, Celebrated and Widely read Author. " Creativity requires a quantum leap in awareness or consciousness", he adds. "The more consciousness you have, the more potential you have to create." Creativity and Innovation, have been exacted by Dr. Deepak Chopra, to a Science.

The Soul of Leadership

In his new book "The Soul of Leadership", Deepak offers an entirely new approach to the exciting possibilities of Leadership. " Great leaders have a vision and the ability to manifest it", he says. "A leader emerges from within himself. He matches his inner perception with outer situation and finds a way to turn his vision into reality". In this book, he combines spiritual wisdom with modern dynamic psychology and fills you with ideas you can put into action to bring out excellence at every level.

He talks about 7 primary roles of a leader - a Protector, Achiever, Team Builder, Nurturer, Transformer and finally a Sage and a Seer whose role is pure light or enlightenment.

"Deepak Chopra opens the door for today's leaders to access the secrets of success without giving up who we are", says Marc Benioff, Chairman and CEO of salesforce.com. "Deepak Chopra really gets it - true leadership is not about popularity, power or profits; but about getting your ego out of the way so that you can serve the greater good", says Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and Lead with LUV.

Deepak -  the Entrepreneur

Dr. Deepak Chopra got thrown into entrepreneurship when he diverted from his allopathic practice to become an Ayurvedic mind, body, spirit health practitioner and teacher and founded the Chopra Institute. In his quest for holistic universal planetary health, that includes even business, entrepreneurial and leadership health, he has written over 65 books with 19 NY Times best-sellers. Wall Street Journal mentioned his book, 'The Soul of Leadership' as among the 5 best business books of 2011. His latest foray has been into gaming where his first video game, 'Leela' (meaning feat), is a groundbreaking concept that combines ancient relaxation and meditation techniques with technology to bring focus, energy and balance to your life.

Dr. Deepak Chopra comes, to enlighten us, to go beyond the boundaries we have set in defining creativity and innovation. Come hear him speak and take a boundless, quantum leap into ground-breaking dimensions of entrepreneurship, leadership and prosperity, at the BreakThrough Thinker's Keynote at this year's TiECon 2012 (May 18 - 19, 2012)

TiEYouth Forum @TiEcon 2012- only few seats left!

TiEcon 2012 Speaker Highlight: Cameron Cohen - Entrepreneur Philanthropist, a Child Prodigy

If there are so many young 11, 12, 13 year old entrepreneurs out there, what's the big deal of yet another one joining the ranks, you might ask. What makes Cameron Cohen, the then 11 year entrepreneur stand out is not so much that he created an iPhone app and it made money on the app-store. It also wasn't that he learnt how to write it and built it when lying immobilized in a hospital bed when recovering from a leg surgery to remove a bone-tumor from his leg. But what makes Cameron Cohen stand out is that of the $50,000 the app made, he decided to donate $20,000 to the Chase Child Life Program at the Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, where he had his bone tumor surgery. A noble gesture indeed by a young pre-teen so that the hospital could purchase MacBooks, iPads, iPods, and video games for teen and preteen patients to use during their stays.

Come get Inspired! Special price of only $20 expires this week.

We will have 2 educational sessions as part of  the TiEYouth Forum.

Mobile Panel @ TiECon 2012 - Emerging Trends, Applications & Opportunities to be Explored

May 10, 2012

Introduction:

For communications professionals, the main event at TiECon2012 -May 18th & 19th in Santa Clara, CA- will likely be Friday morning's Mobile panel session.  The status and dynamics of the mobile industry will be assessed along with the key technologies and applications that will impact the entire mobile ecosystem.  Emerging trends, outlook and opportunities will be identified during what promises to be a stellar session.

Abstract (by TiE)

2011 has been another break-out year for mobile -I nstagram, Square, Spotify have achieved enormous valuations. Android has overtaken iPhone while Apple's iPad seems to be the only player in town. Windows Phone 8 reviews have been nothing short of stellar. Operators are experiencing record data usage and the app economy is as thriving as it has ever been! In this panel, speakers will explore what's next. How are mobile operators and OEMs adapting to the new value chain? Where are venture firms placing bets? What are the key technology choices going forward? What is the next mobile-first trend or opportunity? Attendees will gain a perspective on what to expect as mobility becomes even more mainstream.

Session Chair & Panel Moderator:  Raj Singh,  CEO of Tempo AI, Inc

  • Anil Doradla, Analyst @ William Blair
  • Erik Ekudden, VP Tech Strat @ Ericsson
  • Matt Howard, VC @ Norwest
  • Lars Kamp, Mobile Strat @ Accenture
  • Ben Riga, Evangelist @ Microsoft

http://tiecon.org/agenda/mobile-panel-what-are-emerging-trends-applications-and-opportunities-mobile

Session Preview

The panel will discuss several themes that are vital to the sustainability of the mobile industry and ecosystem.  These include:

Mobile Network Operators:

Mobile data traffic is continuing to explode due to video downloads, video streaming, video cam uploads/downloads, etc. Netflix, Pandora, photo sharing and gaming companies are attracting new users which then consume even more mobile bandwidth. HD video is next and with wireless sensor networks to follow. For sure, the volume of data moving upstream and downstream is going to continue to grow exponentially.

M2M is causing real painpoints for operators with millions of requests of small amounts of data. Will all these different M2M traffic types cripple the provisioning and authentication systems in wireless networks?

Operator infrastructure costs are still an all-time high - what's the network upgrade plan? Numerous data compression companies are helping to reduce the aggregate bandwidth needed for video, but will that be enough? Are data caps or throttling (heavy data users) the only way forward? Increased cell density? Smaller Cells and Heterogeneous networks? Carrier WiFi Offload? Higher throughput mobile backhaul? What combination of these will operators fund for their network upgrade plan?

In addition to having to upgrade their access, backhaul & carrier WiFi offload nets, the operators need to come up with new sources of REVENUE! The U.S.and European mobile subscriber markets are saturated at over 100%. In fact, adding new iPhone subscribers actually causes operators to lose money- due to price concessions to Apple (U.S. mobile carriers heavilly subsidize iPhone sales, such that the more of those they sell, the lower their overall profits!)

Clearly, wireless network operators need to get additional revenue from existing mobile subscribers or attract new industrial customers, e.g. M2M/Internet of Things/mobile heath care/other industry verticals.

Having missed out on the App Store bonanza, there are several path wireless telcos could take:

  • Offer QoS/SLA based premium services (something they've never done before), e.g to support either low latency or high bandwidth apps
  • Go into new markets, e.g. M2M, connected home (energy management, security, light control, entertainment, etc), mobile health care, other vertical markets
  • Get revenue with a device maker that downloads content, e.g. Amazon Kindle 3G model

Which one's will they select and what's their chances of success?

Editors Note:

The mobile operators are at the top of the mobile ecosystem. It is their network infrastructure (cell towers/base stations for mobile access, outdoor WiFi offload, wireless backhaul, etc) that supports all the mobile apps, social networking, on line gaming, virtual goods, e-commerce, mobile banking, photo sharing, etc. If they don't upgrade their networks or can't make a decent profit on services, the mobile ecosystem may whither and die.

Other themes to be addressed by the panel: (time permitting):

  • Monetization & Status of Mobile Advertising
  • Discovery of Mobile Apps for Developers and Users
  • Artificial Intelligence & Cloud Enabled Apps
  • Use of HTML5 to Develop New Mobile Apps
  • Smartphones and Tablets- How Many Players Will Survive?
  • Mobile Payments & Mobile Wallets
  • Mobile Enterprise, Vertical Industry Apps & BYOD
  • International Markets, especially China & India
  • VC Investment in Mobile Ecosystem?
  • Wireless R&D Lab- hardware, software, or both?
  • Time horizon for commercial products & deployments?

Some provocative comments from Raj Singh, Mobile Panel Session Chair & Moderator:

"Mobile advertising continues to receive significant investment, but app developers are still not making money. Is iAd (Apple's mobile advertising network) to be deemed a failure?"

"NFC (Near Field Communications) is supposed to be the savior for mobile payments, but it seems it is only used for everything outside of payments?"

"Cellular data traffic (3G, 4G) is exploding - infrastructure costs are sky-rocketing. Wireless network operators have been marginalized and continue to see profit margins squeezed by smartphone/device subsidies. Is net neutrality going to become the operators best friend, as it promises to hold new mobile apps hostage to carrier data caps (or overage charges)?"

"The App Store is Yahoo circa 1997. The top 200 apps are not sustainable. An app search interface (or engine) is next, or are we each going to get our own personalized app store?"

"WinPhone7 is beautiful but hasn't yet made a dent in the market, despite Nokia's endorsement and use. There is too much focus on the smartphone, the real battle is the tablet and iOS is in total domination. Willing inning the tablet market equate to winning the laptop business too?"

Why would a geek girl want to attend TiECon?

May 8, 2012

Successes such as Instagram, has got the whole developer community up in restless excitement. At least 2 developers approached me the day the Instagram acquisition was announced. And they did their own announcements to me. "Id like to talk to you about becoming an entrepreneur", one said. "Id like to know how exactly to become an entrepreneur and what it takes" said another. ' That looking at Instagram and the 12 people team that made hundreds of millions in a few months, is giving them a blood rush.' They need to do something, especially being surrounded by the startup frenzy in the Silicon Valley.

Entrepreneurship - What it takes

Many an Engineer have I heard around me say, "If we don't do this, living here in the Silicon Valley, abound with all the eco-system, the support-system, the psychology, the talent - then where else". This is the right time, the right economy, the right place and everyone wants a ride on the startup train.

The rosy successes and all - it takes quite a lot to be an entrepreneur. The startup game is a game of speed, calculation and timing the judgement calls you make. What people to hire, who to pick for your founding team, who to partner with, when & how much to take to market, when to raise funds and if you are lucky like Instagram & many others before, when & whether to sell. Do you have what it takes? The Entrepreneurship panel at this year's  Tiecon, gives you food for thought.

Entrepreneurship for Women

Entrepreneurship, if you ask me, is perfect for women - whether single or married, with or without children! And here is why. Well for one, the cliché - that women are great multi-taskers. The initial stages of entrepreneurship are filled with long hours and hard work. No different from being an engineer on a deadline, joining a new company and having to prove yourself under tight deadlines. But running your startup gives women a chance to control their own lives, their own time and they can pretty much choose - when to  spend time with children and when to work.

More importantly, entrepreneurship for women destroys the myths of the Glass ceiling (A woman Entrepreneur - To be or not to be), any Gender socialization (Deborah Gruelfeld at Tiecon on Mastering the Body Language for Power and Influence) and only your technical, social and business skills are the ones on the line. There is no limit to your creativity. The market does not see whether the product has been created by a man or a woman and does not compensate and discriminate based on gender. It is fair, blind like the justice goddess and at the same time unforgiving. You reap what you sow, you are judged and rewarded based on your skill, talent, business acumen, innovation and speed.

Entrepreneurship - What goes into making your startup a success

If you are on the entrepreneurial track, there are many things that go into making your startup or the one you work for, a success. Whether to bootstrap, or take money from Angels or VCs for instance. How to take your product to market and create a buzz, for another. A startup isn't a one man or a one woman show. It is about a team with the perfect complementary skill-sets with the right timing that can pull it off. So how do you build your winning team or judge whether you are part of that winning startup team.   Once your startup is off the ground, does it have the belts and buckles in place for the journey up the hockey stick curve? Or will it crash and burn and be left behind by that agile, lithe competitor? There is a lot that goes into building and driving the explosive hockey-stick growth. And well - if you are young, right out of or in school/college and wondering how you could start a company and/or build a product - there is the Young entrepreneur's guide to getting started doling out advice on it, at the Tie Youth Forum panel at this year's Tiecon.

TiEcon 2012 Speaker Highlight: Cameron Cohen – Entrepreneur Philanthropist, a Child Prodigy

May 8, 2012

In Nov 2011, Thomas Suarez, a 12 year old 6th grader, gave a talk at TEDx on how to develop iOS apps. Leanna Archer decided she wanted to become a hair-care mogul at the age of 11 and by the time she was 14, her company had revenue of more than $100,000. 14 year old Robert Nay's first game hit 2 million downloads within 2 weeks of launch. 13 year old Asya Gonzalez launched a T-shirts & apparel company with the motto - "Buy a t-shirt, save a child". Entrepreneurship, it seems, is getting younger by the day. It is these ranks of young, budding entrepreneurs that Cameron Cohen joined, when at the age of 11, he created and launched his first iPhone app - iSketch.

"When I was in the hospital, I had my computer and iPod Touch to distract me. But I saw so many other kids who didn't", said Cohen. "The last thing you want to do is think about what happened or what operation you have coming up. You want to be distracted. So when I saw money coming in from iSketch, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to give back."

When recovering from the bone tumor surgery at the Mattel hospital followed by a nine-month recovery period in a hip-to-toe brace, Cameron tried passing his time by using various apps to draw and doodle. When he couldn't find any good, reasonably priced apps, he decided to build one himself. But there was a hitch, he had never done iOS programming before. Well, he was an 11 year old, so no wonder. He asked his parents to buy him some books so he could learn iOS programming. He taught himself Objective-C to build the iPhone app and built, what he later put on the Apple app-store for $0.99 - the app iSketch. He built and put it up for $0.99 so a lot of kids could buy it, when the $5 or $10 apps were not something they could afford.

What is admirable about Cameron Cohen is his industriousness, his fearless attitude towards learning new things, building and doing something he has never done before, turning adversity into something constructive, fueling his growth and learning. And when it happened to make him some money at that young an age, instead of saving it for his college tuition, or buying toys and gear, giving it away to the needy.

Come hear this child prodigy and a modern-day young Warren Buffet, speak at this year's  Tiecon (2012) at the Tie Youth's forum, where he talks about Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs. Bring the young Entrepreneurs in your home and/or sponsor other young ones in your neighborhood for just $50. A small investment of $50, that could create yet another Cameron Cohen, a Thomas Suarez, or a future Warren Buffet, is a small price to pay indeed.
